Graduate Assistantship in GIScience at Central Michigan University

The Department of Geography at Central Michigan University has 1 Research Assistant Position for the M.S. program in Geographic Information Sciences. The deadline for applications is March 15th, 2016. The RA position will provide tuition and stipend for 1 calendar year (12-months), with additional funding possible after 1 year. Several Teaching Assistant Positions (9-month) are also available.

Ideal candidates should have a strong background in GIS, remote sensing, and physical geography/earth science/biology. Basic computer programming and statistics are required.

The M.S. program in Geographic Information Sciences (GISci) provides advanced course work and applied research in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and remote sensing. Each student will complete a thesis or research project that applies GISci techniques to urban planning, transportation, biogeography, environmental modeling, or other issues that require spatial data analysis and visualization. Graduates will develop skills that will qualify them for a variety of spatial data processing positions that make up a rapidly growing field in the information technology industry. Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Center for Geographic Information Science with state-of-the-art equipment and technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles, survey-grade GPS, web-mapping servers, and spectrometers and the Institute for Great Lakes Research which has a research station on Beaver Island. Several students from the GISci program have recently won top state-wide awards for their research. Central Michigan University also offers a graduate certificate in Data Mining.
