Overview
The Associate Specialist, GIS & Spatial Analysis will contribute to WWF-Canada’s conservation goals by providing mapping, database management and spatial analysis. This role requires a motivated individual capable of using current geospatial technologies to turn data into insights. Furthermore, the role will provide vital research and support to ensure WWF’s conservation program is based on strong, quantitative, conservation science.
Responsibilities
- Work with WWF Conservation staff, including within Canada and in the WWF global network to develop quantitative, spatial analysis to support our priority programs.
- Provide accurate and up-to-date science and spatial analysis to set a solid foundation for WWF’s conservation objectives towards quantifiable measurement of results and impact.
- Use knowledge of GIS programming libraries to automate simple workflows.
- Complete mapping and data analysis tasks, including spatial analysis, geo-processing, and developing scripts.
- Apply analytical skills to derive insights from data in a variety of spatial and non-spatial formats.
- Deliver high-quality cartographic and research products within project deadlines.
- Research and data collection – assess, compile, and catalogue baseline and spatial, biological, environmental, and traditional knowledge information.
Qualifications
- Related Masters’ degree; OR Undergraduate degree/diploma with studies focused in GIS, ecology, environmental studies, resource management, or similar field, plus 1 year or more of related experience.
- Demonstrated ability to use GIS and remote sensing software, including ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Pro.
- Proficient in use of programming for data analysis and management (Python or R).
- Ability to develop interactive webmaps using ESRI’s Web AppBuilder or similar technology.
- Strong database management skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Office or MySQL.
- Strong cartographic and data visualization skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and research skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multi-person teams.
Additional Desirable Skills:
- Familiar with Python’s geospatial libraries and statistical such as Geopandas, Rasterio, scikit learn, PySAL, etc.
- Experience working with Google Earth Engine.
- Working knowledge of data visualization software such as Tableau or BI.
- Experience in a government, academic, ENGO or business setting working on conservation issues, or environmental assessment.
- Ability to interpret and work with climate change data and climate models.
