IUCN Maldives GIS job

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Maldives office is looking for a GIS Officer.

GIS Officer
1.   BACKGROUND
The GoM-USAID-IUCN Project REGENERATE is a six-year project, funded by USAID, aimed at strengthening the sustainable management of coastal resources, particularly coral reefs, thereby strengthening economic, social, and environmental resilience to the adverse effects of climate change in Maldives. This directly supports the Maldives strategy ‘Climate Change Adaptation fostered through Economic, Environment, and Social Resilience’.

In June 2012, Maldives announced the global pledge to declare the whole of Maldives as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve by 2017 at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, RIO+20 meeting in Rio De Janeiro. IUCN Maldives is assisting the Government of Maldives in completing and finalising the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nomination dossier, including a zoning map of the proposed Biosphere Reserve. The GIS Officer will produce a zoning plan for the entire Biosphere Reserve, including core zones, buffer zones and transition zones.

In addition, IUCN Maldives will provide technical support to the government in developing a management plan for the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) of the Maldives. IUCN will collect the necessary social, ecological and physical data necessary for this management plan in collaboration with MEE, MRC and EPA. The GIS Officer will be responsible for mapping all these data and developing a zoning plan for SAMPA.

2.     MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES
The GIS officer will lead on the Geographic Information System (GIS) initiatives of Project REGENERATE, including the mapping of all ecological and survey data collected through the project.

A detailed breakdown of deliverables is outlined below:

  1. Acting as the focal point for all GIS initiatives and coordinate with partners of Project REGENERATE.
  2. Communicating and coordinating with the IUCN Maldives team members to ensure that all relevant ecological and social datasets are collected in the required format for GIS mapping.
  3. Based on ecological datasets, developing zoning plans for all core areas, buffer zones, and transitional areas of the Biosphere Reserve (approximately 30 sites) – this will be one map for the entire Maldives.
  4. Mapping all the data collected from ecological and social surveys in South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) and using them to develop a zoning plan for SAMPA
  5.  Using baseline maps, developing further overlays to identify ecologically sensitive areas and high stakeholder use areas in SAMPA.
