Geospatial Analyst, Chapel Hill, NC Office
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is seeking a Geospatial Analyst with formal training in geographic information systems, cartography, and database management, knowledgeable in environmental issues, to join our Program Communications team. This position is located at SELC’s North Carolina Office, in downtown Chapel Hill, NC. About the Position:
This mid-level position reports to the Senior Geospatial Analyst, works on geospatial analyses and map production for the law and policy team, program communications projects, and handles geospatial data management. Together with the Senior Geospatial Analyst, this position supports all of SELC’s offices. The Geospatial Analyst will work on a daily basis with SELC’s talented team of law and policy experts and communications managers to investigate emerging and lingering environmental concerns. This includes coordinating with partner groups, data providers, environmental agencies, and playing a key role in all aspects of geospatial projects.
This position requires knowledge of environmental law and policy, conservation strategies, and natural sciences to design and implement GIS based solutions to environmental problems. The Geospatial Analyst implements spatial analyses, engages in interactive and static map production, conducts background research, handles spatial data creation, and performs data management. Collectively, these responsibilities deliver answers to important environmental questions relevant to cases and depict those results to an array of audiences.
The work is fast-paced and deadline-driven, and each day will be a little different. A successful candidate should be able to skillfully manage complex projects, juggle multiple priorities, find creative solutions to problems, work well with people of varied personalities and work-styles, take feedback constructively, and engage happily in a back-and-forth collaborative process to arrive at the best final product. An ability to travel within the Southeast is also necessary.

Qualifications:
We are seeking someone with strong geospatial and cartographic skills built on a foundation of environmental law and policy, conservation strategies, and environmental science. The right candidate must be tech-savvy, organized, detail-oriented, friendly, and collaborative. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must. We will give strong preference to candidates with a master’s degree in geography or an environmental field (bachelor’s degree plus comparable work experience considered too); GISP also preferred.
Technical skills should include proficiency with ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS Online, MS Office Suite, and Google Earth Pro. Additional experience in any of the following is favored as well: additional Esri products (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, Server, Online/Portal), Adobe Creative Suite, spatially enabled databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Microsoft SQL Server), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Plotly, d3), web-mapping (e.g., JavaScript, Carto), and/or scripting languages (esp. Python).

Compensation:
The salary range for this position is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
