South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), the oldest and largest of the state’s five water management districts, welcomes a Geographer 3 to join our efforts in preserving and restoring the vital natural environment that extends from Orlando to the Florida Keys.

Located in the Information Technology Division, this mid-level position has the general responsibilities to provide geospatial services and assist end-users with full aspects of GIS technical support including high volume and time-demanding GIS needs for GIS mapping and geospatial data analysis, etc.

Specifically, this position will primarily (~75%) support the needs from the Real Estate and Engineering groups. Therefore, it requires solid proficiency using GIS software (ArcGIS and AutoCAD) to perform survey calculations, measurements, and analysis for assignments; prepare maps and drawings; and store, retrieve and analyze geographic data to complete assignments and make recommendations. In addition, the position will need to research real estate related documents and records to obtain information needed for mapping, drawing, data analysis and calculations. The incumbent may also serve as data steward to produce, update, maintain and QA/QC check GIS data layers and databases.

Requirements:
Strong communication, teamwork and self-management skills are required. Proven skills and experience of AutoCAD and ArcGIS is a must. Knowledge of practices and principles of cartography and the understanding, proper use and design of maps and other graphic representation techniques is required. The successful candidate must possess demonstrated skills and experience in reading and interpreting maps, plats, legal descriptions, aerial photographs, and drawings. Prior real estate mapping experience is required. Ability to manipulate spatial data and perform data processing and analysis using geospatial software is needed. Knowledge and experience of SDE and SQL, ArcGIS Online, Mobile GIS (e.g. Esri Collector/Survey123) are a plus. Knowledge and experience with Environmental Regulation and Environmental Restoration is desirable.

Examples of previous GIS work products, especially related to real estate business, will be required during the candidate interview process.

Employment Guidelines:
This position may be filled at the Geographer 2 level.

Typically has Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geomatics, or a closely related field and 2+ years (1+ years for Geographer 2 hire) of solid, directly related and recent GIS mapping experience, especially involved in supporting real estate business, is required.

License:
Valid State of Florida driver’s license is required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
Due to the District response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies depending on assigned emergency role.

The position will require the individual to take direction and work both independently and in a team setting. Field work for ground-truthing and verification/validation may be needed on an occasional basis.
