GIS Interns for Topographic, Architectural Site Mapping and Modeling (on-site, Tel Shimron Excavation, Israel)
Interns will work alongside archaeological professionals as part of a GIS field team on collection and manipulation of spatial data from the archaeological excavation. Tasks include georectifying photogrammetric models, using those model to create shapefiles, producing daily plans showing the daily progress of the excavation, and building larger models to visualize and analyze ancient architectural patterns and artifact distribution. By the end of the summer interns will have acquired a full suite of skills for large-scale topographic and architectural mapping as well as digital 3D imaging.
The excavation is based at Tel Shimron (www.telshimronexcavation.edu), a multi-period site in the northern Jezreel valley in Israel, and the project runs part of a seven week academic excavation.
Basic competence with ESRI ArcGIS software, attention to detail, willingness to work hard and learn new GIS protocols, and comfort with a fast-paced, high intensity environment. Experience with total stations (Leica) and photogrammetry (Agisoft metashape) preferred but not required – these skills can be taught on site. Interest in experimenting with LAST datasets is also a plus.
The commitment is 7 weeks: arrive during week of June 15- Depart August 4. GIS interns will have all expenses fully covered (airfare, room and board) for the 7 weeks of the project.
